Seminar with Assel Sadykova

The Central Asian Research Centre for Educational Innovation and Transformation (CARCEIT) would like to invite you to our upcoming seminar featuring Assel Sadykova, Teaching Fellow at the Center for Preparatory Studies (CPS), Nazarbayev University. She will present the findings of the research project, "Students' Transition and Navigation of Language, Identity, and Culture in Academic Texts: Exploring Systemic Functional Linguistics and Bourdieu." The seminar will explore how students from diverse backgrounds in Kazakhstan navigate academic texts within English-medium university settings, highlighting the cultural, linguistic, and identity-related challenges they face.
The study investigates the role of academic texts in shaping the experiences of students from diverse backgrounds in Kazakhstan. It examines how students engage with and interpret academic texts within an English-medium university setting, navigating both a unified academic culture and distinct literacy practices. Grounded in applied linguistics and Bourdieu’s cultural capital framework, the research explores how factors such as socioeconomic status and prior schooling influence students' engagement with academic materials, potentially affecting their sense of belonging and academic identity. Through document analysis and student interviews, this study highlights the nuanced ways in which language and culture intersect in educational contexts, offering insights into supporting students' transition to university.
Assel Sadykova supports foundation students at NU CPS in navigating their academic journey, personal growth, and leadership development. She holds a master’s degree in Multilingual Education from Nazarbayev University, where her research focused on linguistic challenges in English-medium instruction (EMI) settings. In addition to her teaching role, Assel is an active researcher. She has contributed to the Central Asian Research Ethics (CARE) project, which focuses on fostering culturally sensitive research ethics practices in the region, and is currently working on a CARCEIT-funded study to expand her master's research.
The seminar is scheduled for November 28 at 14:00, in Nazarbayev University, Block C3, Room 2002.
We kindly ask you to register in advance.
